What do I need a vignette for?

The use of Swiss motorways and expressways is subject to a toll for all motor vehicles and trailers that are not subject to the heavy vehicle charge. This toll is levied in the form of a vignette. In principle, all motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes require a vignette.

The e-vignette is valid following successful registration or activation. When ordering via Digivignette, you will receive confirmation by email as soon as processing is complete.

The annual vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year (14 months).

Yes. Trailers are also subject to the levy, provided they are not subject to the heavy vehicle levy.

Except for trailers towed by motorcycles.

Yes. Motorhomes are liable for tax up to a permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes. If the permissible gross weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the Flat-rate heavy vehicle levy HVI to pay.

Yes. Veteran vehicles are subject to vignette charges.

No. However, due to local circumstances, there are exceptions at the following customs posts:

    • Basel-St. Louis Motorway
    • Rheinfelden motorway and
    • Kreuzlingen motorway

No vignette is required when entering via one of the three toll stations, provided the motorway is exited at the first available exit.

Yes. In Switzerland, unlike other European countries, short-term vignettes are not offered.
